In Remembrance - Four Great Drummers Pass On

by DrumWright 31. August 2010 05:17
During the last four weeks we have lost three of Britain’s greatest drummers and a US rock icon. Chris Dagley ·         The fine young drummer in the Ronnie Scott Band, tragically killed in a motorbike accident on the A40 on his way home to Oxford – just 39 years old. Jack Parnell ·         At 87 years old, not a bad innings!  A man who moved from being a great drummer to a great band leader and then in retirement rediscovered his drumming roots.  It would be between him and Eric Delaney in my opinion to vie for the title of “The British Gene Krupa”, a unique combination of great drumming skills and showmanship.  ·         The last time I spoke to Jack was about seven years ago on the occasion of Bobby Orr... Rhino Round Up - August 2010

by DrumWright 31. August 2010 05:09
Rhino Roundup – August 2010 This months’ roundup begins on a sad note with the recent deaths of four great drummers: Chris Dagley, Jack Parnell, Martin Drew and Richie Hayward (full details in our news section). Musically, it has been an interesting four weeks, I did my first gig with the newly formed 60’s covers band “Rock of Ages”, playing classic covers from Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Manfred Mann, Beach Boys, Loving Spoonful, Searchers, Hollies etc.  The most modern we got was a couple of Police numbers.  How I wish I could play like Stewart Copeland!  I used my DW collectors kit with Zildjian Constantinoples, Avedis and Paiste signatures plus Tama Iron Cobra pedal.  We had some great comments afterwards.  Here is a selection: 'Excellent musicians playing brilliant music''If you love pop rock from the 60's, you'll love these guys... Rhino Round Up - July 2010

by DrumWright 3. July 2010 00:46
It's been a great few weeks musically for DrumWright MD Chris Wright (AKA 'The Rhino') - in this first installment of his brand new blog he tells us what he's been up to. May kicked off with the Berkshire Maestros Gala Concert at the Anvil in Basingstoke and the Maestros percussionensemble, that DrumWright sponsor sounded wonderful, as did the whole Youth Orchestra. There was a superb rendition of the Polovtsian Dances from Borodin's Prince Igor. The piece is an absolute delight for percussionists and features timpani, snare, bass drum, cymbals and tambourine. Rhino Fact coming up! A standard mapex kit snare was used and it produced a great orchestral sound. I was also privileged enough to make the awards to all four students nominated for their achievements. The awards are an annual, DW sponsored event in memory of the late great Jazz drummer and Berkshire resident Allan Ganley. Each... [More]
